i am a fan of shoving random green things in my children's mouths, pureeing bits of nutrient rich stuff to fill out pancakes or thicken soups and such.
but even i was amazed to watch N sit down in a comfy chair after school today, one hand curled protectively around his ipod, his eyes trained on the screen and the other casually reaching in and out of a brown box of mushrooms.
then again, his current obsession is the super mario bros he was enthralled with and i seem to remember them operating out of mushroom land or something... maybe his fungal snack is no coincidence.
A look into the great chaos that is my life as a part-time professor, part-time chiropractor and full-time mommy! I may share my passions for health, food, the arts and learning in general or I may rant and rave, ask for help and in turn keep my sanity :)

excuse me while i chew my arm off!
i am hungry.
not that this morning's gritty vitamin infused smoothie didn't feed my belly..... it did. not that i didn't actually love the huge green salad i ate for lunch.... i really did. i am just hungry for "other" things. it is day two of a twenty one day detox/cleanse/purification (pick your awesome sounding adjective) program! i know- insert collective groan!
why are we detoxing you ask?? because we have been eating like crap and the world is a dirty dirty chemical laden place. anyway, i know there are haters out there making fun of us but whatever, i have wanted to do this for a very long time, but had a child attached to an umbilical cord OR a boob since July of 2009 so......
to celebrate getting my body back to myself, i am going ahead and pissing it off a little bit.
and it. is. MAD!
my stomach is growling at me like a bad intruder and my headache is telling me she that is not in the mood so i should take my frisky business elsewhere. i just took a lovely little nap with N (thank you summer vacation) and i literally DREAMED of a demon fountain coke. sad.
but see- that is precisely why i need to do this, because i don't have room in this body for coke and yucky stuff. i have not been feeling well- sluggish and achy and so "standard process" you better help fix me! big shoes to fill for a little box of supplements and a great big box full of powdered vitamin nastiness- at least it gets mixed with fruit.
the eating part is actually not too bad. since it is summer, so much is available. I think it is mostly in my head- I know i can't have certain things so I totally want them. You know, very exotic things like a piece of chicken or some Parmesan cheese..... but these shakes can bite me.
anyway, the blogging could be a positive thing to help keep me accountable, as if my husband dramatically falling face-first on the couch with an "I'm so hungry" whined into the pillows is not enough. i would feel such guilt that a bite of cottage cheese is simply not worth it! i will keep you posted, but for now i am off to blend up my second (protein and supplements trying to hide in some fruit) shake of the day. Maybe I can close my eyes and pretend it's ice cream- i have always had a good imagination!

my name is jamie and i want to be an orthorexic
I would consider myself a healthy eater.
Or at least I always WAS- what has happened to me? Ever since my little girl graced us with her presence on Easter of LAST year, I have been falling off the wagon repeatedly. I know better than to eat some of the crap that I do and I really want to stay on the right path but more and more I see myself clinging precariously to the healthy wagon train as it leaves for the trip west. Please don't leave me wagon train!!
I just read that something called "orthorexia" may be considered a real psychological condition soon- it is basically an obsession with healthy eating- where do I sign up?
(note: i am downplaying the severity and realize there is much more to it. not poking fun of it either, just myself. but hey why am i apologizing, this is my blog? i need a self-help group. and now i am having a full converation with myself :/)
Back to the eating thing:
Maybe it is her fault, born on Easter after all- one of the three mornings of the year that it is okay to eat candy for breakfast...
Maybe it is my son's fault because he keeps me jumping so I can't sit down to eat a salad for lunch...
Nope- all my fault.
I grab and stuff random morsels into my mouth all day and I crave sugary evil! But I am determined to crawl back onto that wagon.
At least I make them eat healthy- I buy quality local and often organic. I cook from scratch to avoid preservatives and artificial dyes. I grimace at white pasta and white rice and white bread. But somehow today I found myself feeding tiny little A bites of M&Ms to keep her pacified while I decimated the bowl of Easter candy..... where is that self-help group?!

It was so much easier to take care of me when it was just me!
understatement of the century.
